Excuse lack of updates recently; I've been super-busy with my new internship at Wolf & Badger, which - just in case anyone was wondering - is a gorgeous concept store showcasing young independent designers with a focus on a luxury British lifestyle aesthetic.

The latest products to catch my eye are the stackable coffee cups by Phoebe Richardson, £44, which are delightful as hell (geddit? - okay I'll stop punning now). Call over some some friends for some comic relief with your coffee.

McQueen exhibition.

I was ridiculously excited to learn today that there will be a retrospective Alexander McQueen exhibition - Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty - in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, running from 4th May-31st July (hence the excitement, as I shall be arriving in New York for the very first time on the 29th April for a long week!).

Considering that it is a little over a year since the designer's tragic death, as well as the house's role in the creation of Kate Middleton's wedding dress, the exhibition announcement comes at a most pertinent time. According to The Sunday Times:

"The show — which will feature about 100 examples of McQueen’s work — will span a series of galleries depicting the designer’s key themes, such as Romantic Mind and Romantic Primitive. Star pieces will include the dress worn by Shalom Harlow while being spray-painted by robots for his SS99 show and a gown made of silk and real flowers from SS07 that shed blooms as it went down the catwalk. (It will be displayed in a bell jar, adorned again with real flowers, which will decompose over the course of the exhibition to become potpourri-like)".

As the designer is a truly personal favourite of mine, this has to be my cultural highlight of the year.

I've long thought that the beautiful Blake Lively would make a perfect Chanel campaign girl, so I was most enthused when I heard that Karl Lagerfeld had selected her to front a campaign for the iconic Mademoiselle handbag. Now that the pictures have been released, enjoy a visual treat:

NB: Yes, that is "Black Pearl" Lively is sporting on her nails, the latest 'it' colour from the brand - having purchased a bottle today, I can thoroughly recommend this shade of steely silver / forest first-hand.

Just thought I'd share this passage from an insightful article by Colin McDowell in The Sunday Times Style regarding the spring / summer '11 couture collections. This particular excerpt focuses on the widespread nature of baby pink in the collections, namely in Chanel but also in many other houses - refer to previous posts:

Without meaning to sound too fangirl-esque, Gemma Ward is my favourite model ever (pictured below on the cover of i-D), an accolade I don't award lightly.

While I'm on the subject of Taylor, a brief side note: Taylor was absolutely right to argue: "I think women should equally be allowed to pleasure themselves as much as men. I think that if that has any more controversy than a man talking about pleasuring himself, then there's something wrong with the world". Contrary to what the media say, this comment is completely acceptable for a girl of her age because self-experimentation typically starts long before one turns 17. Onanistic habits in young boys are widely accepted, and it should be the same for girls; the issue of whether or not they're of the age of consent, which is the media's main cause for concern, is irrelevant when it comes to self-experimentation.

Super-excited today because, after days of delay due to the snowshine, my new digital camera - a Samsung ES28 - has finally arrived (!). However, it's supposed to be a Christmas present from my parents, so I won't be able to use it till the big day, but in the meantime I can lust over the specs and the oh-so pretty colour:

Here are a couple of shots from the Christmas beauty shoot I organised for my university's student newspaper:

My friend Ruth Wildman did the photography, I did the make-up / styling, and we both modelled (mainly because we failed to find any models last-minute who could do our limited time slot, whoops).

Also, as the second picture shows, I decided to go blonde a couple of weeks ago. In case anyone wants to try the same, I used two packs of Schwarzkopf Live XXL Color Absolute Platinum and Superdrug Colour Effects Wash-in Wash-out Ash Blonde.

Oh, and I'm getting a new digital camera for Christmas, having been without one for a few months now, so expect some pretty pictures of my recent spoils very soon.

Recently, I purchased this Alexander McQueen ring - made of gold-tone brass, enamel, and Swarovski crystals - as a sort of "well-done-for-working-all-summer-and-not-killing-anybody" present to myself:

It cost too much, it was utterly frivolous, and now I won't be able to afford food for a while, but hey, that's fashion. The important thing is that I love it and will wear it for years to come, and with pretty much anything to boot. Some of the people I know hate the ring because they think it's too morbid, but the conflation of death and nature in all its beauty in the ring strikes me as a celebration of life rather than an obsession with death.

Considering that I work at Selfridges, I thought it was about time I visited the much talked about Shoe Galleries. So, I went for a wander during my lunch hour and lusted over the Louboutins, cooed over the Choos, yet mantained an affection solely from afar due to currently completely unattainable price tag.

However, in the Velvet and Glass gallery, I came across the Vivienne Westwood Lady Dragon shoes, £110, in all their wondrous jellified glory. Now, my only issue is deciding between the following delicious colour combinations:

Suddenly, I have all this Yves Saint Laurent beauty love, so I'm going to condense it all into one juicy post for your viewing pleasure.

Firstly, I have found my best-ever mascara in the form of Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effet Faux Cils in "Noir Radical", £21.50. I have achieved good results with Benefit Bad Gal Lash Mascara and Dior DiorShow Extase, although neither compare to this YSL baby. The formula is luxuriously thick and creamy yet doesn't clump, the colour the most intense black around, the brush sumptuous in size - plus the packaging is ridiculously sleek and glamorous:

Also - a first for mascara, I've found - the product smells wonderful, a fresh and slightly citrus-y scent, very similar to that of the brand's Top Secrets Flash Radiance Skincare Brush.

Secondly, I am now working in very close proximity to this beautiful creature in giant cardboard poster form and it pleases me greatly:

Although Karlie Kloss' face is oh-so compelling, you may also notice her nails, a French manicure painted in two colours from the new YSL "Rock and Baroque" nail collection. One of my favourite simple pleasures in life is tea, especially the afternoon kind that involves cake, so imagine my utter delight upon spying this magnificent edible creation:

I am suddenly obsessed with mesh clothing - three Topshop items in particular, to be precise:

I think the first two would look fabulous together, and the cropped grey jumper would be perfect with distressed denim shorts and a tan on lazy summer days.

In other news, I acquired a bottle of Chanel Le Vernis in "Nouvelle Vague" the other day. Although the formula is annoying (three coats to achieve an even base), the colour is actually so beautiful in real life, contrary to my previous opinion that it wasn't all that special - like wearing a Tiffany box on your nails, and ever-so-slightly iridescent in the sunshine.

A quick note on my latest lipstick lust-have: Lime Crime lipstick in "Airborne Unicorn". It's a bold lilac colour that I can't seem to find anywhere else - similar to M.A.C's "Lavender Whip", but that was a limited edition item that has now sold out - which is just the perfect summer shade. Moreover, the packaging is ridiculously cute (although probably not to some people's tastes). Pictures of the product and a swatch (not my own) are below:

It started just over a week ago when I purchased one of the new Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color lipsticks in "Black Orchid", which is named after his best-selling fragrance. There are a total of twelve shades in the range, all retailing at £35 each.

The colour is a highly pigmented dark raisin and the formula is deliciously creamy (ingredients include soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter and chamomilla flower oil), offering excellent lip hydration yet also longevity. Moreover, the vanilla extract ingredient makes the lipstick smell wonderful.

Below are some web cam pictures of me wearing the shade, which should give you an idea of how the shade looks despite the questionable picture quality (also, excuse lack of precision in application - these pictures were taken after a night out at 3am, oops):

I thoroughly recommend this particular shade, especially considering that the sales assistant informed me that a nail polish in the same "Black Orchid" shade would be released around Christmas - this won't be the case for other shades in the lipstick range.

Finally, I have to mention the packaging of this product, which is really something special: the lipstick comes in an ivory cuboid-shaped tube, adorned with gold edges. The picture below featuring three of the other available shades - "Blush Nude", "Cherry Lush", and "Warm Sable" - demonstrates the product's aesthetic appeal:

Skincare on a budget.

This is a guide for when you’ve somehow run out of all your expensive skincare products simultaneously and need a more frugal regime to see you through for the foreseeable future. This is currently my main skincare regime, except I've still got my Lancôme Tonique Douceur and Exfoliance Clarté as additions, although the toner can be skipped and I have an excellent recipe for a replacement facial scrub, plus one for a weekly face mask that I currently use. This whole regime is very effective yet gentle on the skin (thank the absence of alcohol).

1. Cleanser - Dove Beauty Cream Bar 2-Pack, £1.15.

Normal soap is too harsh to use on your face, but this bar from Dove is made from ¼ moisturising cream and is actually dermatologically recommended for facial use.

2. Moisturiser - Vaseline Pure Petroleum Jelly 225g, £2.39.

Some of you may be concerned that using this product on the face but I have problematic combination skin myself and can safely say that this product certainly doesn't break me out - on the contrary, it hydrates dry patches while offering enough moisture to oily areas, removing the need for excessive sebum production (a major cause of spots). Apply a very thin layer to the skin and gently spread across the face without rubbing in too much.

3. Exfoliator (use twice-weekly) - Recipe:

• ½ cup granulated sugar
• ½ cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
• ½ cup sweet almond oil
• 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
• 1 tbsp. ground oatmeal
• 1 tsp. nutmeg

Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight jar for further use. Scrub face with mixture 2-3 minutes, rinse with lukewarm water, finish with a splash of cold to tighten pores, and pat dry.

4. Face mask (use weekly) - Recipe:

• ½ a medium ripe avocado
• 1 tbsp. honey
• 1 tbsp. plain yoghurt

Mash ingredients together using a fork until smooth. Apply liberally to a clean face and leave for 15 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water, splash with cold, pat dry.

Urghh, so I failed to purchase anything yesterday at TheOutnet.com's birthday sale - I managed to get items into my basket a few times but the server just kept crashing a crazy amount and I could never get to payment, and this went on for over an hour. Shortly afterwards, something horrendous happened: somehow, my dark denim shorts ended up in my delicate white wash and now my once pristine ivory Calvin Klein lace underwear set is virtually grey and looks absolutely ancient even though I've only had it for about one month.

All in all, a bad fashion day. However, I was slightly cheered around the midnight hours when I won this delightful Markus Lupfer sequined jumper on eBay, brand new with tags for about a third of the RRP:

Just thought I would share a two pieces of boudoir beauty. Firstly, I give you Dior ‘Creme de Rose’ Lip Balm SPF 10, £19:

A slightly ridiculous amount to pay for a lip balm, granted, but this product really leaves lips super-soft and smells divinely of rose due to the precious damask rose essential oil ingredient. Plus the packaging is absolutely gorgeous, no? So simple, so chic, so French.

Next up is Paul and Joe Body Milk, £25. Initially striking is the beautiful box bottle the product comes in, followed by the bottle itself, complete with an ornate gold-tone top. When applied, the product has a delicate scent, absorbs quickly, and - enriched with avocado oil, almond oil, and honey - moisturises intensely.

I adore the romantic neutrals of this season (especially when worn with Doc Martens or massive goth boots from Camden Market to toughen up the look) in addition to underwear as outerwear. However, nobody (well, almost nobody) wants to look like a sheep in their sartorial efforts, which can happen if everything you're wearing is straight out of the latest Topshop ad campaign. This is where the importance of accessorising becomes evident and so, for spring / summer '10 as well as next season, I am favouring the glove - that's the purely ornamental kind, mind you. Apologies for update failure - I have been away for the past week skiing in Meribel, devoid of internet access.

Anyway, this is just a quick post about Chanel's new "it" polish, "Nouvelle Vague", £16, which hits the beauty counters in May. The polish has been released as part of Chanel's new summer '10 collection consisting of the aforementioned "Nouvelle Vague", "Mistral" (a soft yet warm pink with a slight sparkle), and "Riviera" (a vivid peony pink). "Nouvelle Vague" is a beautiful turquoise, unarguably vibrant yet muted enough to be classed as a pastel:

I really do like the colour, although I don't think it's as unique or special as "Particulière" - China Glaze in "For Audrey" is very similar, and the colour in general seems fairly easy to replicate. Still, "Nouvelle Vague" gets my overall approval.

Just thought that I'd share two excellent products that I have recently included in my skincare regime:

1. Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm - All Skin Types, 125ml, £19.

This product is perfect for the efficient removal of stubborn make-up, including long-wearing foundation, sunscreen and waterproof mascara, rendering this product a necessity for summer beauty. Use as a pre-cleanser.

Directions: Take a large pea-sized amount on one finger, rub with another finger so that the balm begins to melt into a silky fluid oil, then sweep and massage all over the face; remove with either a cotton pad or warm water. Follow-up with your usual cleanser.

2. Lancôme Exfoliance Clarté - For Normal and Combination Skin, 100ml, £26.50.

This gel-based product consists of white wax micro-beads, ultra-fine grains, and pineapple and papaya extract. The result is a gentle yet thoroughly effective exfoliator that smells wonderful and leaves skin radiant.

Directions: After cleansing, massage onto wet skin using gentle circular motions. Rinse off with warm water followed by a splash a of cold to tighten pores. Finish with your usual toner and moisturiser. Use once or twice per week.

For some, the mere mention of the shoe instantly conjures Dutch milkmaid / '60s hippie connotations, while others simply find the shoe downright ugly.

Personally, however, I find the shoe evokes a certain charm: the innocent simplicity of the materials (sylvan wood and leather) and palette (earthy tones) appeals during a period of recession, yet sex appeal can still be attained when worn properly - I'll be wearing mine in the summer with tanned dewy legs, tiny denim shorts and an oversized white shirt. Okay, so I've always had a problem with my nails in that I bite them terribly (in addition to all the surrounding skin, cuticles, etc.). I've tried Stop'n Grow to no avail as well as painting my tiny talons pretty colours for aesthetic motivation, only to chomp off all the polish imminently.

However, I may have managed to cure this addiction of mine once and for all. You see, two days ago, I managed to secure myself a bottle of Chanel Le Vernis in "Particulière" (bought at face value, may I add), otherwise known as the "it" polish of the season, following in the footsteps of last season's "Jade". 48 hours later and I have bitten neither a nail nor a fleck of polish (think of the cost-factor implicit in the incessant re-application) - understand that I have previously never lasted more than about an hour.

There is never a single cure for addiction; everyone must find their own personal method. For me, as a fashion and beauty junkie, I guess it took something elusive and exclusive to quit my habit. All may go downhill tomorrow, but I'm hoping that I will soon be blessed with non-mangled nails that are enjoyed by so many already.

Yesterday, the news broke of the tragic death of Alexander McQueen. Having won the British Designer of the Year Award four times in addition to being awarded a CBE, McQueen had already accomplished so much in his life; however, at only 40 years-old, he still had so much more to achieve. The way he revolutionised fashion - from low-slung jeans to alien shoes - will never be forgotten. Moreover, the spectacular theatrical elements of McQueen's shows in addition to his penchant for the animal kingdom in all its violent beauty will remain imprinted into the hearts of fashionistas everywhere.

Due to my pale complexion, finding the right shade of foundation can often seem like an impossible task. When I discovered Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation in Alabaster, I thought I had found my perfect colour match, which, in truth, I had. However, the product was terrible in terms of staying power - after an hour, the product had clearly started to displace, even when worn with both primer and powder.

So, the other day, I decided it was time to start searching for a foundation that was pale enough for my fair skin and that stayed on all day. This is when I came across Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makup in 1C1 Shell.

It looks natural and has medium to full coverage (plus you can always mix with moisturiser for a more sheer look); most importantly, however, it's pale enough for my porcelain pallor and still looks good several hours later. Overall, I thoroughly recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a foundation in a pale shade and / or staying power.

NB: Do make sure you moisturise properly before using this product - it needs something to help it glide on smoothly, plus it dries rather quickly and doesn't budge once it does.

Just thought I'd share a recent purchase of mine with the fashion world:

Snapped these up in the Russell and Bromley sale. There was only pair left, which just happened to be in my size; it would have been wrong not to buy them, surely? The gold, bronze, rose and lime palette renders the shoes a delightful accompaniment to this season's neutrals. Moreover, the chocolate leather subverts the girlishness of the bows, resulting in a pair of sequinned pumps with attitude. Oh, and they go brilliantly with this Topshop dress, £35, that I shall be purchasing as soon as the student loan comes in:

The spring / summer 2010 shows certainly began the new decade with panache. From sexy collegiate sportswear at Alexander Wang to thigh-skimming trenches in cool pastels at Burberry Prorsum to romantic lingerie-based looks at Fendi, there was an enthralling fashion fix for everyone.

My personal favourite, however, were the offerings of Phoebe Philo for Céline. Sticking to a palette of neutrals and monochrome, the collection focused on clean shapes that flatter women. Elegant simplicity combined with discreet luxury and sensuality, resulting in an overall attitude of quiet confidence. My most coveted look from the show? The flesh-coloured body worn with a leather skirt and bare legs, of course:

Summer fantasy.

It may only be the beginning of January, but that doesn't mean we can't start having little summer fantasies. I stumbled across this photograph of Gemma Ward earlier, taken from US Vogue in 2005, resulting in sartorial seaside daydreams.

The white eye liner and shadow combination sported by Gemma is one of my personal favourite make-up looks - perfect for crazy summer nights. Get the look using the Rimmel Soft Kohl Kajal Eye Pencil in "Pure White" and a Bourjois Little Round Pot Eye Shadow in "Blanc diaphane". If this particular look seems a bit too extreme for you, simply line your lower and upper lash lines with highlighter pencil to achieve a more subtle effect that really enlarges your eyes - the Benefit Mr. Frosty pencil, £12.50, is perfect for the job.

The catwalks for the spring / summer 2009 collections reflected the current financial crisis, in that designers focused on strong pieces typical of their own particular brand. The clothes are as opulent as ever, but trends are gone. What's 'in' right now are timeless pieces that will remain glamorous for years to come. That doesn't mean that designer fashion has become any less expensive, but it has become more tempting. Customers are spoilt for choice as designers strive to create pieces that pass the seasonal sell-by date and are simply irresistable. The idea is that we should stop spending money on endless seasonal items and instead invest in a piece of luxury that will last forever.

This all makes a lot of sense. However, the fact remains that most of us still don't quite have the budget for that dream piece of McQueen. That's where vintage comes in: stunning clothes, whose age proves their longevity, and you're guaranteed to find a bargain. Certain outlets of Topshop, most notably the flagship store in Oxford Circus, sell beautiful vintage party pieces. I picked up this impeccably detailed jacket for £50:

Meanwhile, Beyond Retro sells just about anything vintage - daytime and evening wear, countless leather jackets, shoes, accessories, etc. The only store locations are in London and Stockholm, so plan a fashion trip if you're not a resident of either. I'm loving the large sequins on this skirt, £22, which is reminiscent of Christopher Kane's autumn / winter 2008 collection:

A fresh face for a new year.

Now that the crazy Christmas / New Year party season is over, it's likely that your skin requires a detox just as much as you do. Back away from the glittery stage make-up of the past few weeks and opt to begin 2009 with a fresh face. Here's how:

Step 1: Skincare - Proper hydration for your skin is vital right now due to excess toxins depriving your skin of vitamin C, resulting in a dull complexion. Ensure that you cleanse and moisturise daily (and always before applying make-up), using products appropriate to your skin's needs. A weekly mask would also be ideal.

Step 2: Concealer - A must if you want to hide those dark under-eye circles. Apply from the top of the cheekbones all the way up to your lash line, then take some to the inner-corner of your eyes. Always use yellow-based shades of concealer, foundation and powder rather than orange for a more natural look. My product of choice is the infamous Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Highligher, £16.50 when bought from online retailers.

Step 3: Foundation - Use a light foundation or tinted moisturiser in order to achieve a natural look. Always apply after concealer and blend using either fingers or a brush. For a flawless complexion, use Chanel Vitalumière Satin Smoothing Fluid Make-up - pricey at £29, but foundation is the one make-up product that you should really spend as much money as possible on. Plus, it provides SPF 15.

Step 4: Blusher + Highlighter - Blusher immediately adds radiance to your skin and makes you look healthier. I favour the cream / liquid variety for perfectly dewy skin - get the look with Benefit PosieTint, £22.50. Next, use an equally creamy highlighter to contour your face. Dab Benefit High Beam, £15.50, over cheek bones and brow bones for glamorous daytime look.

Step 5: Eyes - Make your eyes appear larger by applying a pearly shadow to the inner corners of your eyes - the Benefit Mr. Frosty pencil, £12.50, works a treat. For an enhanced effect, line your lower and upper lash lines with the product. When it comes to mascara, I prefer one that offers intense volume, even for daytime. Bourjois Volume Clubbing mascara, £8, in "Absolute Black" works wonders.

Step 6: Lips - Keep lips clean and smooth. Exfoliate them with a dry toothbrush, then apply a moisturising balm or clear gloss - I adore Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Dark Chocolate & Mint Lip Butter, approx. £2.50.

Step 7: Brows - Use slanted tweezers to pluck an stray hairs between and below the brows, but never above. Keep everything in place with a slick of Vaseline, 99p.

... That's about it! Happy New Year, everybody!
